US prosecutors moved on Wednesday to dismiss the criminal case against two associates of former President Donald Trump accused of obstructing an investigation into his handling of classified documents, according to a court filing.
Those indicted include Trump’s personal valet, Walt Nauta, and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira. Both have not been fighting the case. This step finally brings the Special Counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution related to the ex-president, Trump, as he resigned earlier this month before the return of the ex-president to the Oval Office.
Nauta and De Oliveira had been charged previously for allegedly attempting to obstruct the federal investigation into Trump’s retention of classified documents after leaving office. The case was part of a broader probe that had already resulted in charges against Trump himself. With these charges dismissed, the focus is now on the cases pending against Trump.
