HMPV Cases Rise in Malaysia Post-China Outbreak, Public Advised

Malaysia has seen a 45% rise in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, according to the latest government report. In 2024, 327 new cases were recorded, up from 225 in 2023. This rise follows a similar surge in respiratory illnesses in China.

Health Ministry Calls for Caution

The Malaysian Health Ministry urges the public to stay vigilant. They note that extreme weather conditions will continue to cause respiratory infections. Authorities advise good hygiene practices, such as washing hands, wearing masks, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Despite the increase, officials say these seasonal spikes in respiratory infections are typical at the start and end of the year.

China Faces HMPV Surge

China, especially the northern regions, is experiencing a sharp rise in HMPV cases. Social media shows people wearing masks in hospitals. However, Chinese authorities downplay the situation, calling it a “winter occurrence.” They reassure the public that it’s safe to travel to China. The surge, though, has raised concerns globally, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.

India Monitors the Situation

India is closely watching the rise in HMPV cases. The Health Ministry held a meeting to assess the situation. However, officials emphasize that there is no cause for alarm. “Metapneumovirus is like any other respiratory virus that causes the common cold. It may cause flu-like symptoms in young and elderly people,” said an official. India has not seen a significant increase in cases in 2024.

What is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)?

HMPV often causes cold-like symptoms and upper respiratory infections. In some cases, it can lead to pneumonia, asthma flare-ups, or worsen chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Rarely, it can be fatal. HMPV is most common in winter and early spring. Most people contract it before age five. However, symptoms tend to be mild after the first infection.

Symptoms of HMPV

HMPV symptoms include:

  • Severe cough
  • High fever
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Sore throat
  • Wheezing and breathlessness
  • Rashes

How HMPV Spreads and Who Is at Risk

HMPV spreads through direct contact with infected people or contaminated surfaces. Coughing, sneezing, shaking hands, and hugging can spread the virus. Those at higher risk for severe illness include:

  • Children under 5 and adults over 60
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • Individuals with asthma or COPD

How to Prevent HMPV

To prevent HMPV and other infections, follow these steps:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water
  • Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or tissue
  • Avoid close contact with sick people
  • Wear a mask in crowded places
  • Don’t touch your face, eyes, nose, or mouth
  • Don’t share food or utensils

These simple measures can help reduce the spread of HMPV.
