My faith that music has the power to connect and tide us through unprecedented times is constantly reinstated. Musicians can adapt and reinvent themselves according to the changing times and this never ceases to amaze! Each week passes and is made livelier by the fact that I can discuss and debate happenings in the world of music with like-minded peers. Many of our discussions have been a flashback to the iconic 70’s era; always a fantastic add on to any music lover’s playlist.

The lyrics of “Let It Be” by the Beatles could have been written to provide solace in the situation we find ourselves in today. “And when the broken-hearted people living in the world agree, there will be an answer let it be… for though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see, there will be an answer, let it be” resonates with one and all. Stevie Wonder’s gripping “Superstition” makes you want to dance and “Stayin’ Alive” is an all-time favourite, wherein the magic of the Bee Gees’ is recreated time and again.

Fast forward to the present and we have a new debut ruling the Billboard Hot Hundred Charts. “Dynamite” by BTS makes it the first all-South Korean group to hit No 1 on the Hot 100. The song’s bright, disco beats have been praised by critics and are sure to get your fingers snapping. Harry Style’s “Watermelon Sugar” makes it to the top ten and is compelling pop that highlights the British singer’s voice set against a groovy bassline and funky electric guitar.

One can hear the evident passion in “Stars” by Simply Red and this goes out for all the romantics this month. For the Louis Armstrong fans, what better way to remember the legendary trumpeter and singer than by listening to his classic “What A Wonderful World”. As Armstrong’s familiar and compelling voice fills the room, one can›t help but sit back and reflect on all that is good in the world as the worries and troubles of the day give way to sheer power and magic that only this extraordinary artist can weave. Until next time….fill your mind with the beautiful imagery that this song conveys through “trees of green and skies of blue” and think to yourself that it is indeed a wonderful world.
