Kapil Parmar has created history by winning India’s first-ever Paralympic judo medal at the 2024 Paris Games. He secured a bronze in the men’s 60kg (J1) category by defeating Brazil’s Elielton de Oliveira in the play-off with a commanding 10-0 victory.
Overcoming a Tough Journey
Parmar’s journey to victory is nothing short of inspiring. Hailing from a small village named Shivor in Madhya Pradesh, he had a life-altering accident as a child when he accidentally touched a water pump and suffered a severe electric shock. This incident left him in a coma for six months. But Parmar’s determination and love for judo never wavered.
Supported by his brother Lalit and his mentors, Bhagwan Das and Manoj, Parmar pursued his passion despite the challenges. He and his brother even ran a tea stall to make ends meet. Lalit remains his greatest source of inspiration and financial support.

Parmar’s bronze win comes after a tough competition in the semifinals, where he lost 0-10 to Iran’s S Banitaba Khorram Abadi. However, he bounced back in the play-off, dominating his Brazilian opponent from start to finish.
The J1 class in para judo is for athletes with no to very low visual activity. Parmar, who previously won a silver at the 2022 Asian Games, demonstrated exceptional skill in the bronze medal contest. Despite receiving a yellow card for minor violations, he showed impressive resilience and focus.
