A 30-year-old IPS official has been arrested for allegedly raping a 28-year-old woman doctor in Nagpur, Maharashtra, on the pretext of marrying her, officials told PTI on Sunday.

The woman registered a complaint at the Imamwada Police Station on Friday, after which an FIR was filed. According to her complaint, she and the accused first met on Instagram in November 2022. He was then studying for the UPSC exam, while she was studying for her MBBS degree, police added.

What started as online conversations gradually escalated into regular phone calls. As their bond grew stronger, the officer allegedly promised to wed her and eventually entered into a physical relationship with her, the police said.

But once the officer had cleared the Union Public Service Commission exam and was selected for the Indian Police Service (IPS), he began to distance himself and later refused to marry her, a senior official said. The woman also said that his family did not react to her several attempts at contacting them, leaving her troubled and forcing her to approach the police.

Soon after her statement, a case of rape was registered against the police officer on Saturday. Authorities confirmed that an inquiry into the issue is being carried out.
