US President Donald Trump admitted that he couldn’t find time to buy a birthday gift for First Lady Melania Trump, who turned 55 on Saturday. Instead, he planned a special dinner for her on Air Force One.
The couple traveled to Rome on Friday to attend the funeral of Pope Francis. However, they did not stay in the city after the event. They returned to the United States immediately after the funeral, skipping any celebration in Italy.
“She’s Got a Working Birthday”
While speaking to reporters on the presidential plane, Trump acknowledged that the celebration might not sound ideal. He said, “She’s got a working birthday.” This trip marked their first foreign visit since Trump regained power.
He explained that the demands of his second term left little time for personal celebrations. Trump said, “I haven’t had time to buy presents, it’s been pretty busy.”
When asked about birthday plans, he responded, “I’m taking her for dinner on the Boeing — I’m taking her for dinner on Air Force One.” He then joked about sending Melania back to reporters, calling it the “lion’s den.”
A Public Appearance Together
Before the trip, Donald and Melania Trump were seen boarding Air Force One at a military base near Washington. Melania wore a long tan trench coat and sunglasses. Their appearance together caught public attention as they are rarely seen together.
Since Trump returned to office, Melania has mostly lived in New York. Their 19-year-old son, Barron, is studying at a university there. Despite living apart, they occasionally appear together at major events.
Past Birthdays Spent Separately
This year, they celebrated her birthday in the air. But last year, they spent her birthday in different places. Melania stayed in Florida, while Trump attended a court trial in New York linked to hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels.
At that time, Trump told reporters, “It’d be nice to be with her, but I’m at a courthouse for a rigged trial.”
