Pope Francis will be buried on Saturday, following his death on Easter Monday at the age of 88. He had been suffering from pneumonia for the past five weeks before passing away. The burial ceremony is expected to be a major event, drawing large crowds and global attention.

Authorities in Italy and the Vatican have organized a large-scale security operation for the funeral. Up to 200,000 people are expected to attend the ceremony. Security measures include a no-fly zone, fighter jets on standby, and snipers positioned on rooftops around Vatican City. Before the burial, the Vatican allowed the public to view the pope’s body for three days. Thousands of mourners lined up to pay their final respects.

Burial Site Breaks Tradition

Unlike most popes who are buried in the Vatican, Pope Francis will rest in Santa Maria Maggiore, his favorite church in Rome. This choice marks a clear break from centuries-old tradition.

Known for his simple lifestyle, Pope Francis had chosen to live in a modest guesthouse in the Vatican instead of the official papal apartments. He often traveled to areas on the outskirts of society, instead of focusing on central or elite locations within the Church.

In his will, he gave specific instructions for his burial. He wrote, “The tomb must be in the earth; simple, without particular decoration and with the only inscription: Franciscus.” He also noted that the burial should be funded “by a sum provided by a benefactor.”

As per his wishes, he will be buried in a single wooden coffin. This is different from previous popes, who were placed in three coffins, one inside the other. His final resting place will be a plain marble tomb.

A Historic Church with Rich Legacy

Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the four major papal basilicas in Rome. It houses the remains of famous figures like Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the renowned architect and sculptor who designed St. Peter’s Square and its grand columns. The church’s interior remains largely unchanged since ancient times. Its central nave is lined with 40 Ionic columns and features beautiful mosaic artwork.

Global Leaders to Attend Funeral

Many prominent world leaders and dignitaries will attend the funeral. Among them are Indian President Droupadi Murmu and former US President Donald Trump. His successor, Joe Biden, will also be present.

Other attendees include Argentine President Javier Milei, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Lebanon’s Joseph Aoun. Over a dozen royal family members are also expected, including Britain’s Prince William.
