After Pahalgam Tragedy, UNSC Pushes for Justice and Accountability

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) strongly condemned the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. In this incident, Pakistani and local terrorists killed 26 people, most of them tourists.

Council Demands Accountability

The UNSC called the attack a “reprehensible act of terrorism.” It stressed that the attackers and their supporters must face justice.“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, during which at least 26 people were killed and many more injured,” the Council said in a statement on Friday.

This press statement came from the UNSC president, speaking for all 15 members, including Pakistan, which is currently a non-permanent member.

Terrorism Threatens Global Peace

The UNSC said all forms of terrorism pose a major threat to international peace. It insisted that no excuse can justify such acts. “The members reiterated that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever, and by whomsoever committed.” It also emphasized the importance of international cooperation to bring terrorists and their sponsors to justice.

Support for Victims and Nations

The Council members expressed sympathy for the victims and their families. They also offered condolences to the governments of India and Nepal. They wished a full and quick recovery to those injured in the attack.

Lashkar Proxy Behind the Attack

After the incident, Indian authorities found links to cross-border terrorism. A proxy group of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, called The Resistance Group, claimed responsibility for the killings. This revelation led to widespread outrage across India and other countries.

India Responds With Diplomatic Action

India responded firmly to the terror attack. It announced several diplomatic and strategic measures against Pakistan, such as:

  • Expelling Pakistani military attachés

  • Suspending the Indus Waters Treaty

  • Shutting down the Attari land transit post

New Delhi said these steps were necessary because of Pakistan’s involvement in cross-border terror.

Pakistan Strikes Back With Countersteps

In response, Pakistan closed its airspace to all Indian airlines. It also halted trade with India, including through third-party countries. Furthermore, Pakistan rejected India’s move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. It warned that cutting off Pakistan’s share of water would be seen as an “act of war.”
