OpenAI Retires GPT-4 with Launch of New GPT-4.1 Model Next Week—What’s Coming Next?

OpenAI is said to be releasing its new artificial intelligence model, GPT-4.1, as early as next week, The Verge says. The higher version of the GPT-4o should also come in two lightweight varieties—GPT-4.1 Mini and GPT-4.1 Nano—to satisfy various applications and device capabilities.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had also earlier hinted at new model plans, such as the “o3 reasoning model” and “o4 mini,” both of which could debut alongside GPT-4.1. OpenAI seems to be scheduling these releases as part of a more extensive shift in its AI family.

GPT-4 to Be Phased Out by April 30

In a major move, OpenAI announced through a changelog (according to TechCrunch) that it will start phasing out the existing GPT-4 model on April 30. Although GPT-4 will remain available through the API, the new GPT-4o has surpassed its parent in many areas, such as creative writing, coding, problem-solving based on STEM, and adhering to complex instructions.

With these improvements, GPT-4o is currently being marketed as the primary model for users. OpenAI was keen to highlight that GPT-4o has improved conversational flow and problem-solving capacity, making it an obvious step up from GPT-4.

ChatGPT Becomes Smarter with Memory and Picture Creation

The other key milestone is the launch of a memory capability in ChatGPT. The feature allows the chatbot to store previous user interactions, making it respond with more personalized and context-aware answers. Privacy-conscious users can still disable the memory feature or have temporary chats.

Furthermore, GPT-4o also includes native image generation abilities, which have been trending on the web. Social media has been filled with very detailed, Ghibli-style drawings that were created by the model, pointing towards its ability to create visually pleasing outputs all by itself without the help of third-party plugins.

As GPT-4.1 waits in the wings and enhanced functionality is being rolled out, OpenAI is pushing the boundaries of generative AI toward an increasingly responsive, smart, and creative user experience.
