A HIGH school student was successfully rescued Friday after attempting to commit suicide atop a billboard in La Paz, Iloilo City.

Liza (not her real name) climbed the billboard of telecom giant PLDT in its Iloilo main office past 9am as she tried to end her own life by attempting to jump.

Rescue workers and law enforcers responded to the scene and made efforts to secure the area in case she jumped off from the billboard, which was more than 50 feet from the ground.

Rescue volunteers Robert Torre, Darwin Papa, and Joseph Señeres of Royal Eagles led a team that also included Randy Plenago of the Iloilo City Crisis Management which climbed the billboard and made efforts to talk to the troubled girl.

On the ground, two negotiators from the Crisis Management Team and La Paz PNP repeatedly talked to the girl, but to no avail.

It was only when her uncle and mother arrived in the scene and talked to her via phone that she agreed to come down with the rescuers.

The Chinoy volunteers from the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Volunteer Fire Brigade Inc. were instrumental in the latter part of the rescue efforts.

Brothers Henry and Hubert Sio rode the movable crane of the Federation’s fire truck and airlifted the girl to safety.

The victim was immediately taken to the Women and Children's Protection Desk (WCPD) at Police Precinct 1 of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) where she confirmed to authorities of her family problems.

According to a neighbor who wants to remain anonymous, she has been pressured to keep up with her studies and help out in their family-owned carinderia in a subdivision in Jaro district.

The neighbor further stated that she was scolded by her mother since Thursday when the latter found out that her grades in several subjects decreased.

The suicide attempt caused massive traffic jam along E. Lopez St. in Jaro district and Luna St. for almost two hours yesterday morning with vehicles stalling and people gathering to watch the event unfold.
