Zelenskyy Reaches New York For U.N. Meetings, Reports Ukrinform

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in New York to participate in sessions at the U.N. General Assembly, according to a report from the Ukrinform state news agency on Sunday.

Zelenskyy visit to the U.N. General Assembly in New York aligns with U.S. plans to finalize a $375 million military aid package for Ukraine, marking a departure from the smaller aid packages that have been provided in recent months for Kyiv’s military efforts.

Zelenskyy is set to present a “victory plan” regarding Ukraine’s war against Russia during separate meetings with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday.

He also hopes to meet with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has criticized U.S. aid to Ukraine as a waste of money and has been noncommittal about wanting Ukraine to win. Trump indicated he will likely meet with Zelenskyy this week, although no specific date has been confirmed.

Trump will be running against Harris in the U.S. election on November 5.

Zelenskyy has frequently expressed concerns about a lack of weapons, particularly essential 155-millimeter artillery shells produced at the Scranton plant. These worries have intensified as Russia continues to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in anticipation of the crucial winter months.

Two U.S. officials informed Reuters on Friday that an aid package, expected to be announced this week, will include patrol boats, more ammunition for high-mobility artillery rocket systems, 155- and 105-millimeter artillery rounds, spare parts, and other weaponry.

The officials noted that the specifics and scale of the package may change in the coming days before President Biden is expected to sign it.
