In a shocking incident from Rajasthan’s Nagaur district, a woman was subjected to horrifying abuse as her husband tied her legs, attached her to his bike, and dragged her across rocky terrain while she screamed for help. The disturbing event, captured in a 40-second video, has sparked outrage online and sheds light on the ongoing violence faced by women in India.
The video shows the woman, injured and in immense pain, crying out for help as her husband dragged her across the ground. After coming to a stop, the man dismounts his bike and stands over her, surveying his actions with a cold and arrogant demeanor. His pose—hands on hips as his wife writhes at his feet—symbolizes the deep-seated abuse and misogyny that many women endure.
What makes the incident even more chilling is the apathy of those present. The video shows at least three bystanders, including another woman and the person recording the attack, yet none of them intervened to stop the assault. Even villagers near the scene, to whose gates the woman was dragged, remained silent and did not come to her aid.
This shocking incident has come to light as the nation grapples with another heinous crime—the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital—highlighting the pervasive violence that women in India face daily.
While details about the man involved in the Nagaur incident are still emerging, initial reports suggest that he is the woman’s husband and that the assault was triggered by her desire to visit her sister in Jaisalmer. However, there is also speculation that this could be a case of bride trafficking, a practice in which women are ‘bought’ as wives from other states—a custom reported in areas like Jhunjhunu, Nagaur, and Pali.
Women trafficked in this manner often suffer severe physical, mental, and sexual abuse, forced into labor and subjected to the whims of their ‘husbands’ and, at times, other men in the community. This aspect of the case is also being investigated by the police, who suspect that the woman might have been ‘purchased’ by the man, identified as Prem Ram Meghwal, a 40-something unemployed drug addict, around 10 months ago for ₹2 lakh.
Local authorities have taken Meghwal into custody and have reached out to the woman, who is currently in Jaisalmer. An FIR has been filed, and the police have stated that the person who recorded the video without intervening will also face legal action. “We are treating this matter with utmost seriousness. It appears the man attacked his wife over a dispute regarding her wish to visit her sister. We have made contact with her, and once she returns to Nagaur, further action will be taken,” said Nagaur Police Superintendent Narayan Togas.
