The Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations kicked off in Mumbai with grandeur as the GSB Seva Mandal, also known as the host of India’s ‘richest Ganpati,’ unveiled its idol adorned with 66 kg of gold and 325 kg of silver. The Matunga-based mandal is famous for its elaborate decorations and opulent display of wealth, attracting thousands of devotees every year.
Record-Breaking Insurance
This year, the GSB Seva Mandal has procured a record insurance of Rs 400.58 crore for the five-day festival, which runs from September 7 to 11. The festival is known for its meticulous planning, security measures, and spiritual significance.

The first glimpse of the grand Ganesha idol was unveiled at Mumbai’s King’s Circle on Thursday evening, accompanied by traditional chants, music, and dhol beats. Devotees gathered in large numbers to witness this sacred moment, marking the beginning of the 70th Ganeshotsav organized by the GSB Seva Mandal.
Ganesh Chaturthi: A Grand Festival
Ganesh Chaturthi, one of Maharashtra’s biggest festivals, began on September 7 with devotees installing idols of Lord Ganesha in homes and public pandals. The 10-day festival features joyous celebrations, rituals, and concludes with the immersion (visarjan) of Ganesha idols in water bodies.
Extensive Security Measures
To ensure smooth celebrations, around 15,000 police personnel, including 32 Deputy Commissioners, 45 Assistant Commissioners, and over 12,000 constables, will be on duty across the state. Security forces such as the State Reserve Police Force, Rapid Action Force, and Riot Control Unit will also be deployed to maintain law and order during the festivities.
