Varanasi is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh and among the 543 seats in India, represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won from the constituency for two consecutive terms – 2014 and 2019 and is also the BJP candidate for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections 2024.
The constituency has been a BJP bastion since 1991. In this election, PM Modi faces Congress’s Uttar Pradesh President Ajai Rai and Athar Jamal Lari from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, PM Modi secured a landslide victory with a margin of 479,505 votes, defeating Shalini Yadav of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Ajai Rai, who finished third. In 2014, he won against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by 371,784 votes.

According to EC data, the BJP is ahead in 244 seats including leads and wins which is around 30 seats short of the 272 mark required for a majority in the 543-member House. In 2014 and 2019, the BJP bagged a majority on its own while the NDA partners added to the tally.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi secured victory in the seat with 673,453 votes, which accounted for 63.9% of the total votes cast. His closest rival was Samajwadi Party candidate Shalini Yadav, who received 194,763 votes, constituting 18.5% of the votes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emerged victorious in the Varanasi seat in Uttar Pradesh during both the 2014 and 2019 general elections. However, in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the seat was secured by BJP leader Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi.
