A man has been arrested for allegedly raping and murdering a nurse in Uttarakhand while she was on her way home from the hospital two weeks ago. The tragic incident occurred in the Udham Singh Nagar district, and the accused was apprehended on August 14, as reported by the sources.
The nurse, who worked at a private hospital in Nainital, was found dead in an empty plot in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district. The crime took place on July 30.
The accused, Dharmendra Kumar, is a daily wage laborer from Bareilly. He allegedly attacked the nurse while she was returning home, sexually assaulted her, and then killed her.
The nurse was reported missing by her sister on July 31 after she failed to return home the previous night. On August 8, the police discovered her body.
According to the police, the accused dragged the victim into nearby bushes, where he raped and strangled her. He then stole her jewelry and fled the scene. Police tracked him down in Rajasthan using the victim’s phone and arrested him.
SSP Manjunath T C stated, “The accused is a drug addict and did not know the woman. On the day of the incident, he saw her walking alone. She fought back fiercely, but he overpowered her, strangled her to death, and sexually assaulted her. After the murder, he took her belongings and escaped.”
This incident has occurred amid a larger outcry in the healthcare community following the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9. Opposition leaders and doctors’ associations have accused the Kolkata Police of attempting to cover up the crime, as the victim’s parents were initially told their daughter had committed suicide.
