Heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand has led to significant damage and loss of life. At least ten people have been confirmed dead, and both the concrete and footbridges on the Kedarnath route have been severely damaged, according to Uttarakhand State Disaster Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman.
On Thursday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the disaster-stricken areas and held a review meeting at the State Emergency Operation Centre. The Chief Minister emphasized that while the Chardham routes remain open, the footpath to Kedarnath is obstructed. Additionally, about 100 other routes are blocked, with ongoing efforts to restore access.
CM Dhami reported that rescue teams have been working around the clock to relocate affected individuals to safety. “We have been informed of widespread disruptions due to the heavy rains. Rescue operations continued through the night to ensure people are moved to safer locations,” he stated.
In response to the disaster, CM Dhami has ensured that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are on high alert. He instructed officials to prioritize assistance and relocation efforts for those at risk from rising rivers and drains. The Chief Minister also assured that necessary funds for evacuation, relief, and reconstruction would be promptly provided by the government.
Relief and rescue operations are focused on heavily impacted areas such as Rambada, Bhimbali, and Jakhaniyali. The Chief Minister has directed all district officers to act swiftly in disaster situations, prioritizing public safety and coordination at the local level.
Additionally, the Uttarakhand government has issued a safety advisory for Chardham Yatra pilgrims due to forecasted heavy rainfall. Pilgrims are advised to postpone their journeys until conditions improve and to remain in safe locations. Director General of Police Abhinav Kumar stressed the importance of heeding safety instructions and starting journeys only after conditions stabilize.
“The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for most districts in Uttarakhand. Ensuring your safety is our top priority,” DGP Kumar emphasized.
