After Meta unveils its latest lineup of Llama AI models, there could not have been a more shocking message from Google CEO Sundar Pichai- saying congratulations to the team after launch. “Never a dull day in the AI world! Congrats to the Llama 4 team, Onwards!” he wrote in a post that picked up on social media quite fast.
Meta has launched three models in its Llama 4 line recently: Maverick, Scout, and Behemoth. Of these, the Maverick and Scout are available now, whereas Behemoth is still being trained. The new models are already being seen as straight competitors to Google’s own AI, especially its Gemini series.
In spite of the competition, Ahmad Al-Dahle, head of generative AI at Meta, warmly responded to Pichai’s note, commenting, “Thanks Sundar! We don’t like dull days here thanks!”

Meta asserts that its lead model Llama 4 Maverick excels Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash in various respects, such as coding, reasoning, image tests, and performance with longer context. The lightweight Llama 4 Scout purportedly also trumps Gemini 2.0 Flash Lite.
At the launch, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg presented the company’s vision for artificial intelligence. In a video message, he stated, “Our goal is to build the world’s leading ai, open source it, and make it universally accessible so that everyone in the world benefits.”. and i’ve been saying for some time now that i believe that open source ai is going to become the dominant models, and with alot with llama 4 this is beginning to become a reality.
These sophisticated models will now become the foundation of Meta’s AI assistant, which runs across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram.
Notably, this is not the first time Sundar Pichai has taken note of a competitor’s AI innovation. He had previously congratulated Elon Musk on the launch of Grok-3, saying, “Congrats on the progress! Look forward to trying it out,” in reply to Musk’s tweet. Musk had boasted that Grok-3 was better than a number of well-known models, including Google’s Gemini 2 Pro.
