Typhoon Krathon is rapidly approaching Taiwan after wreaking havoc in the northern Philippines. With the potential to reach Category 4 strength, the storm has prompted widespread warnings and evacuations in southern Taiwan.
On Monday, Typhoon Krathon was moving northwest at about 9 km/h, positioned approximately 220 kilometers southeast of Cape Eluanbi, Taiwan’s southernmost point. With sustained winds of 162 km/h and gusts up to 198 km/h, the storm is expected to have its most significant impact between Tuesday and Thursday.
Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued alerts for the southwestern regions, emphasizing the storm’s potential to cause landslides and flooding. Gene Huang, a CWA forecaster, noted that it is “rare” for a typhoon of this strength to strike the island’s western plains directly.
The mountainous districts of Taoyuan, Maolin, Namasia, and Liugui in Kaohsiung are on high alert for landslides, leading to precautionary evacuations. Local authorities have also warned coastal and island communities about storm surges and flooding, prompting evacuations and the suspension of ferry services.
As Typhoon Krathon nears landfall, it is expected to bring heavy rainfall, particularly in southern and eastern Taiwan. Some areas could receive up to 800 mm of rain, while regions like Hualien and Taitung may see over 200 mm within 24 hours.
In response to the approaching storm, Kaohsiung officials have begun implementing disaster prevention measures. On Monday alone, 521 individuals were evacuated from high-risk mountainous regions. Local schools have switched to online classes, and sandbags and mobile pumping units are being deployed to mitigate flooding.
The Eighth Army Corps has been mobilized to assist with evacuations and to help move individuals and vehicles from danger zones. Although Kaohsiung’s north-south high-speed rail is still operational, the rail line connecting southern Taiwan to the east coast has been suspended. International flights from Taipei remain unaffected as conditions are closely monitored.
With Typhoon Krathon set to make landfall soon, residents in affected areas are urged to stay alert and follow safety protocols. Authorities continue to prepare for the worst as the storm approaches, emphasizing the need for vigilance in the face of severe weather conditions.
