Former President Donald Trump finds himself under fire after making misleading comments about Vice President Kamala Harris’ race at the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago. Trump falsely suggested that Harris, the first Black woman and Asian American vice president, had only highlighted her Indian heritage in the past.

Controversial Remarks Spark Backlash

During a contentious interview with ABC News’ Rachel Scott, Trump’s statements caused a stir. Harris dismissed his comments as the “same old show,” emphasizing the need for Black women to rally against Trump in the upcoming election. At a subsequent rally in Pennsylvania, Trump refrained from repeating his claims but mispronounced Harris’ name multiple times. His team displayed outdated news headlines labeling her as the “first Indian-American senator.”

Democrats, including Harris, have criticized Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance, labeling them as “weird” amidst Vance’s challenging campaign rollout. Trump is now defending Vance’s controversial remarks while managing his legal battles.

Trump’s Legal Challenges Continue

A New York appeals court denied Trump’s attempt to lift a gag order in his hush money criminal case. The court upheld the restrictions, citing no change in circumstances since his May conviction. Trump’s lawyers argued that Harris’ presidential campaign adds urgency to their request, highlighting the perceived double standard in public commentary.

Trump’s sentencing, initially set for July, was postponed to September 18, pending a defense request to overturn his conviction following a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity.

Key Political Races Draw Attention

In Washington state, congressional primaries are gaining significant attention. Republican Rep. Kim Schrier faces a challenge in the moderate 8th Congressional District, while Trump-endorsed Joe Kent seeks to unseat Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez in a tight race.

Meanwhile, in Virginia, a recount is underway in the Republican primary for the 5th Congressional District, where John McGuire, backed by Trump, narrowly leads U.S. Rep. Bob Good. Good’s recount request stems from alleged voting irregularities, though election officials express confidence in the results.

Vice Presidential Contender Polling

As Vice President Harris prepares to announce her running mate, a new poll highlights the varying recognition and favorability of potential contenders. Arizona Senator Mark Kelly emerges as a strong prospect, while Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, less known nationally, could leverage regional support.

Tennessee Senate Race

Tennessee’s primary election will determine if state Rep. Gloria Johnson becomes the Democratic nominee against Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn. Johnson gained national attention after surviving an expulsion effort for her role in a gun control protest. Her race follows the controversy surrounding the “Tennessee Three,” who faced expulsion for advocating gun control legislation.

Maricopa County Election Official Ousted

In Arizona, Republican election official Stephen Richer lost his primary race in Maricopa County, influenced by misinformation and threats following the 2020 election. Richer’s departure signals a shift in the county’s election oversight amid ongoing political tensions.
