In a heated opening to the first presidential debate, Democratic Vice-President Kamala Harris strongly criticized former Republican President Donald Trump over his stance on abortion bans, highlighting the lack of exceptions for incest or rape in many states under Republican control. Trump countered by accusing Harris of supporting late-term abortions, escalating the tension in a debate that could have a profound impact on the upcoming election.
Kamala Harris, in her sharp attack, pointed out that more than 20 states with abortion bans influenced by Trump do not make exceptions for cases of incest or rape. She described this as “immoral” and emphasized the struggles women face, particularly young victims of incest who are forced to carry pregnancies to term. Harris warned voters that if Trump is re-elected, he would likely sign into law a national abortion ban.
“In states with Trump-backed abortion bans, young girls as young as 12 are forced to carry pregnancies conceived from rape. That’s not freedom,” Harris stated.
Trump pushed back against Harris’s claims, stating that the decision on abortion had been passed to the states and that he has not advocated for a national abortion ban. He dismissed Harris’s accusations as misleading, shifting the conversation by questioning Harris about her stance on late-term abortions.
“Kamala Harris would allow abortions in the seventh, eighth, and ninth months,” Trump said, attempting to portray her as an extremist on the issue.
Harris fired back by accusing Trump’s policies of harming couples seeking fertility treatments, such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF), which are being restricted in states with stringent reproductive laws. She emphasized the barriers many couples now face in accessing healthcare due to these laws.
“Couples are being denied the healthcare they need because of restrictive policies put in place by Trump’s allies,” Harris argued.
Though Trump’s campaign has largely focused on issues like inflation and immigration, which have seen improvements under President Biden, the former president found himself defending his past record and fending off personal attacks. While Trump largely avoided direct insults against Harris during the debate, he eventually referred to her as a “Marxist” as the discussion became more contentious.
The debate, which took place in Philadelphia at the National Constitution Center, could have far-reaching consequences for the 2024 election, with polls showing a tight race between the two candidates. Although debates typically do not change voters’ minds, the narrow margins in battleground states mean that even a slight shift in public opinion could influence the outcome.
Both campaigns are vying for votes in crucial states, and the clash over abortion rights is expected to resonate strongly with key voter groups.
