Tibet’s Pure Land Vineyard Breaks Records as the World’s Highest

Tibet’s Pure Land & Super-High Altitude Vineyard, located at an impressive 3,563.31 meters (11,690 feet) above sea level, has officially earned the Guinness World Records title for the highest vineyard in the world. Situated near the Lhasa River in Caina Town, Qushui County, Lhasa, China, the vineyard thrives in a unique terroir that nurtures exceptional grape growth.

According to Guinness World Records, the grapes in this high-altitude vineyard have adapted to the extreme conditions, where there is a significant temperature difference between day and night. “These grapes are specially adapted to grow in the region, which has a huge temperature difference between daytime and night-time,” allowing them to develop higher sugar content during the day while the cooler nights help build acidity. The grapes are “almost having their own ‘sunglasses’ to cope with the conditions.”

The vineyard’s creation has also benefited the local community by providing job opportunities for Tibetan villagers. After testing 60 grape varieties, wine experts identified four that could flourish in these high-altitude conditions. This remarkable feat, which originally secured the world record title in 2018, has generated increased interest in the region.

Guinness World Records has long been known for recognizing extraordinary places, such as the Philippines’ hotel with 15 rooms, and the largest building shaped like a chicken, awarded its title in September 2024.
