Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat strongly refuted comparisons between India’s current situation and the recent unrest in Bangladesh, asserting that India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, is distinct and resilient. Speaking to reporters at Jodhpur airport on Saturday, Minister Shekhawat addressed remarks suggesting that a Bangladesh-like scenario could unfold in India, condemning such statements as misguided and unfounded.
“It is unfortunate that some individuals have speculated about a Bangladesh-like situation arising in India. They probably don’t realize that this is not Bangladesh; this is India—Modi ji’s India,” Shekhawat stated, emphasizing the stability and strength of the country under the current government. “Those who think they can replicate such a scenario here should understand the consequences they would face,” he added.
Although Minister Shekhawat did not specifically name any individuals, his comments were widely interpreted as a response to recent statements made by senior Congress leaders Salman Khurshid and Mani Shankar Aiyar. Earlier this week, Khurshid, during a book release event, had expressed concern that the situation in Bangladesh could potentially be mirrored in India, a sentiment echoed by Aiyar in subsequent remarks.
Regarding the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, Minister Shekhawat described it as “unexpected and unacceptable,” assuring that the Indian government is closely monitoring developments. He expressed hope that law and order would soon be restored in the neighboring country.
In addition to addressing the Bangladesh comparison, Shekhawat touched upon tourism initiatives in Rajasthan. He highlighted the allocation of four circuits to the state under the Swadesh Darshan Yojana, noting that this was just the beginning of a larger collaborative effort with the state government to boost tourism in the region.
“Tourism is a state subject according to the Constitution, and these circuits were granted during Prime Minister Modi’s second term. We look forward to working closely with the state government to enhance tourism across the entire region,” Shekhawat said. He also mentioned the ongoing construction of a new terminal building at Jodhpur airport, with more than 45 percent of the work completed. The terminal is expected to be inaugurated by the end of the year, marking a significant upgrade in the region’s infrastructure.
