Tata Electronics has officially started the construction of its ₹27,000 crore semiconductor chip assembly plant in ‘Jagiroad, Morigaon district, Assam‘. Expected to become operational in 2025, this significant project aims to create 27,000 jobs, including 15,000 direct and 12,000 indirect employment opportunities.

During the Bhumi Pujan (foundation stone laying) ceremony, attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, the company announced its commitment to accelerating the factory’s development. Chandrasekaran highlighted that 1,000 people from Assam have already been employed, with plans to bring more companies from the semiconductor ecosystem as the facility expands.

The project received approval from the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on February 29, 2024. Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw praised the swift progress, noting that construction began within five months of approval.

Vaishnaw emphasized the plant’s capacity to manufacture 4.83 crore chips per day using uniquely Indian-developed technologies. These chips will be integral to vehicles, including electric vehicles, and essential components for 5G and network infrastructure.

The minister stated that the semiconductor industry serves as a foundational industry, fostering both downstream and upstream employment. The India Semiconductor Mission aims to develop 85,000 talents, with nine institutes in the Northeast focusing on skill development for this sector.

Institutions like NIT Silchar, NIT Mizoram, NIT Manipur, and others are actively working on talent development for the semiconductor industry. Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of the “Act East” policy and the role of this new facility in advancing it.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the day as a ‘golden day’ for Assam, ensuring Tata Sons that the state will provide full support to the project. Sarma acknowledged the efforts of Prime Minister Modi and Union ministers in making this project possible.

In addition to the Assam facility, Tata Electronics is also establishing India’s first wafer fabrication unit in Dholera, Gujarat, with a capacity to produce 50,000 wafers per month and an investment of ₹91,000 crore. The first chip from this plant is expected by December 2026.

This development marks a significant milestone in India’s journey to becoming a global semiconductor hub, with Tata Electronics playing a pivotal role in advancing the nation’s technological capabilities.
