Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s remarks about governance in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing that Congress has historically imposed President’s rule in the region more than any other party.
While addressing a public meeting in Kathua, Shah criticized Gandhi’s statement regarding “outsiders” ruling Jammu and Kashmir, referring specifically to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. “Rahul Gandhi claims outsiders will rule in Jammu and Kashmir. If there is a party that has imposed Presidential rule most times, it is the Congress,” Shah stated.
Shah highlighted the recent record voter turnout of 55% in Jammu and Kashmir, attributing it to the decline of terrorism in the region. “Democracy has become strong in Jammu and Kashmir,” he noted, criticizing past political dynasties for promoting nepotism. He praised Prime Minister Modi’s efforts to empower local governance through Panchayati Raj institutions, stating, “Now, over 40,000 people celebrate democracy in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Amit Shah urged voters to support BJP candidates, stating that a win for BJP would lead to celebrations across India, while a victory for Congress or the National Conference would mean celebrations in Pakistan. He also vowed that the BJP would not allow Congress to end reservation policies if they were to regain power, countering Rahul Gandhi’s assertions.
The second phase of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections took place on September 25, with the final phase scheduled for October 1. Vote counting is set for October 8. This election marks the first assembly elections in the Union Territory after a decade and the first since the abrogation of Article 370.
