External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is set to lead the Indian delegation at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which will be held next week in Kazakhstan.

Announcing the delegation in its weekly press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, ‘The External affairs minister will be leading our delegation there.’

Earlier Prime minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation with Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on June 25. During telephonic conversation, PM Modi hoped for the successful conclusion of the upcoming summit in Astana.

Both the countries affirmed their commitment in advancing their bilateral strategic partnerships. And also expressed confidence, that Kazakhstan’s leadership will further enhance regional cooperation.

Brief Information About SCO Summit

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is a political, economic, and security group, which was established in the year 2001.

This grouping mostly focuses on regional security, counter-terrorism and economic cooperation among member states.

Its current members include these following countries- China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Currently, Belarus is set to become a full member of this group. central Asian country Kazakhstan took over summit’s presidency from India, as in July 2023, India virtually hosted the summit. Under its presidency, Iran became a full member of this grouping.
