The Supreme Court has postponed its hearing on the Kolkata rape and murder case that was originally set for September 5. This delay is due to the absence of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, as confirmed by a notice from the court.
The official notice stated, “Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India will not be holding the Court on 05.09.2024 (Thursday). Hence, the sitting of Chief Justice’s Court comprising Hon’ble the Chief Justice, Hon’ble Mr. Justice J.B. Pardiwala, and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Manoj Misra stands cancelled, and the matters listed before this Bench will not be taken up for hearing.”
No new date for the hearing has been set.
On Wednesday night, people across Kolkata gathered to demand a thorough investigation and the arrest of those involved in the rape and murder of a woman doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident, which occurred during the doctor’s night shift last month, has led to protests across the country. Her body was found in a seminar room at the hospital.
The doctor’s parents have made serious accusations, claiming that the state police attempted to bribe them in an effort to silence the case. They also accused Kolkata Police of covering up the crime by hurriedly cremating her body.
