External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “demanding boss” who expects thorough preparation from his ministers. Speaking at the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Aditya Birla Group Scholarships Programme in Mumbai, Jaishankar shared insights into his working relationship with Modi.
He explained that interactions with the Prime Minister require ministers to be fully prepared, as Modi himself is diligent about understanding the details of discussions. Jaishankar emphasized that when presenting any issue or case to the Prime Minister, it is crucial to stand firm, back up arguments with data, and ensure readiness. “He is honestly a demanding boss,” Jaishankar said, adding that the Prime Minister’s preparation sets a high standard.
Despite his high expectations, Jaishankar highlighted Modi’s leadership style, noting that the Prime Minister grants operational freedom and avoids micromanaging. He provided an example from India’s evacuation of students from Ukraine after Russia’s invasion. According to Jaishankar, Modi made the decision to prioritize evacuations and gave him the autonomy to carry out the operation, including coordinating with the Air Force and civil aviation, and using diplomatic channels for further action.
Jaishankar also praised Modi’s ability to build strong international relationships, pointing out that the Prime Minister has cultivated connections with multiple US presidents, including Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. Jaishankar recalled how, during his tenure as Foreign Minister, Modi questioned India’s underdeveloped relations with Australia and urged a more proactive approach to strengthening bilateral ties.
Through these interactions, Jaishankar emphasized the balance between Modi’s demanding nature and his trust in his ministers’ abilities to execute important tasks.
