The roof of a rundown house in the Bhori Dera area of Haridwar collapsed due to heavy rainfall, resulting in the deaths of two children and injuries to nine others. The victims were identified as Aas Mohammed, age 10, and Nagma, age 8, as an official said. Speaking about the incident, Haridwar District Magistrate Dhiraj Singh Garbyal said, “Following heavy rainfall, 11 people were trapped in the debris after a roof of a house collapsed in Bhori Dera under the Bahadarabad police station area of Haridwar. Two children Aas Mohammed (10) and Nagma (8) died in the incident and three others were critically injured and are undergoing treatment. The remaining people are also hospitalised but are out of danger. This old house was in a dilapidated state, and heavy rain caused it to collapse,” said the DM.
Haridwar Senior Superintent of Police (SSP) Pramendra Singh Dobal spoke to ANI and said, “Due to heavy rainfall, a house collapsed between 7.30 pm and 8 pm. We received a call around 8 pm following which officials and teams were rushed to the spot to carry out rescue operation. Unfortunately, two children – Aas Mohammed and Nagma – were killed in the incident. The injured have been admitted to various hospitals and reasons for the collapse are being investigated,” he said.
The District Magistrate and SSP arrived at the scene to evaluate the situation. They spoke with local residents and promptly arranged for the injured to be transported to the local hospital. The officials also promised to provide compensation to the families of the deceased and the injured in accordance with government regulations.
The DM and SSP stated that the administration and police are focused on rescuing individuals trapped in the incident first, with compensation to be addressed afterward. Earlier on Wednesday, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) sounded a ‘red alert’ for Uttarakhand.
Acting on Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s directives, Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey conducted inspections of disaster relief camps and affected regions in Tehri district on Monday. Pandey visited locations including Government Inter College Vinak Khal, Tingarh village, and Budhakedar, addressing the concerns of local residents. He met with disaster-affected individuals and officials in temporary relief camps, assuring them of the government’s dedication to prompt and effective disaster relief measures.
Chief Minister Dhami stressed that there should be no lack of funding for disaster relief efforts. During his visit, the commissioner evaluated the relief camp arrangements, directing that power backup, television access, educational support for children, and livelihood assistance be provided.
