The heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Pune’s dams has dramatically increased water levels. For the first time this monsoon season, the irrigation department discharged water from the Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River after it reached 95% capacity on July 24.

Pune is under a red alert according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). District Collector Suhas Diwase has ordered schools to close due to ongoing rain and severe waterlogging. The IMD reports that during June 1 to July 24, 2024, the Pune district received 567.2 mm of rain.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that he has coordinated with officials to put the Indian Air Force and Army on alert for potential flood relief operations in Pune and other affected areas. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is currently stationed at Mantralaya, overseeing coordination with various authorities.

The IMD forecasts that Pune will continue to receive heavy rainfall in isolated ghat regions and moderate showers in the plains until Friday.
