For the first time in three decades, a Kashmiri Pandit woman is set to run for office in Kashmir. Daisy Raina, representing the Republican Party of India (Athawale), is contesting from Pulwama, a region once known for Hizbul Mujahideen activities. Her candidacy marks a significant shift in the political landscape.
Raina, who worked in a private company in New Delhi before returning to her roots in 2021, sees her bid as a result of the improved peace and stability in the region since 2019. She is vying for the Rajpora constituency, reflecting a broader change in the political environment.
The upcoming Assembly Elections in Jammu and Kashmir, scheduled to start on September 18, 2024, will feature nine female candidates in the first phase. Of these, five are contesting from Kashmir and four from Jammu. This increase in female representation highlights the evolving dynamics in the region’s political arena.
