The family members of former Bihar CM Karpoori Thakur expressed their gratitude and joy, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for posthumously honoring him with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to present the Bharat Ratna to Karpoori Thakur on Saturday. Thakur’s family members have arrived in Delhi to receive the award from President Murmu, with Bihar Minister Maheshwar Hazari accompanying them.
Ram Nath Thakur, son of Karpoori Thakur and JD (U) leader, expressed his happiness, stating, “The people of Bihar and the country are as delighted as I am today. Nitish Kumar ji had consistently urged the Government of India to confer the Bharat Ratna on Karpoori Thakur ji.”
Namita Kumari, Karpoori Thakur’s granddaughter, described the occasion as a “historic moment” not just for the family but for the entire state of Bihar. She conveyed her gratitude to PM Modi for the recognition.
Similarly, Ranjit Kumar, Karpoori Thakur’s grandson, expressed his appreciation to PM Modi for announcing Karpoori Thakur’s name for the Bharat Ratna during a meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence.
Maheshwar Hazari expressed his gratitude to PM Modi and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar for the honor bestowed upon Karpoori Thakur, stating, “The people of Samastipur have always believed that Karpoori Thakur should be conferred with such an honor.”
This year, the central government announced five recipients of the Bharat Ratna. Besides Karpoori Thakur, former PMs Chaudhary Charan Singh and PV Narasimha Rao, and MS Swaminathan, recognized as the father of the green revolution, have been selected for the prestigious award. Additionally, veteran BJP leader LK Advani will also be honored with the Bharat Ratna. This marks the highest number of Bharat Ratna recipients since 1999 when four individuals were awarded the honor.
