The Kolkata Police have arrested two more people in connection with the alleged ragging and death of an 18-year-old Jadavpur University student earlier this week.

Deepshekhar Dutta, a second-year economics student, and Manotosh Ghosh, a second-year sociology student, were arrested for their claimed involvement in the incident.

Previously, the police had detained an ex-university student, Sourabh Chowdhury. He was placed in police detention until August 22 on Saturday. Chowdhury, an ex-student, was staying illegally at the hostel. In 2022, he completed his MSc in Mathematics. According to police sources, preliminary inquiry revealed that the victim was exposed to extreme ragging, and they are looking into a sexual harassment angle.

According to several social media posts, students frequently endure vulgar insults and are forced to perform sexual activities, such as stripping, during ragging, they claimed, adding that all of these angles are being investigated.

Swapnadip Kundu, a first-year undergraduate Bengali (Honours) student, fell from the balcony of the university’s main dorm building at 11:45 p.m. on August 9. He was rushed to the hospital and died around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The uncle of the teenager, Arup Kundu, came forward and stated as “Swapnadip spoke to his mother on Wednesday evening and told her he was not feeling good and was scared.

“His mother asked him what had happened, and he said, ‘You please come fast. I have lots of things to tell you.’ When she called him back, the calls went unanswered. About an hour later, his parents got a call asking them to come to Kolkata as their son had suffered a fall.”
