On National Unity Day, which this year coincided with Diwali, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a strong caution against forces he claims are attempting to weaken India’s unity for political gains. Speaking near the Statue of Unity in Kevadiya, Gujarat, he urged citizens to recognize and oppose what he called the “alliance of urban Naxals.”
During his speech, PM Modi stressed the importance of national unity at a time when “countries are growing apart, but coming close to India.” He remarked on the global interest in India’s approach to solving its internal issues, which he described as creating “a new history.” He emphasized, “The world is watching how India is resolving its issues. So we have to protect our unity,” highlighting the need to defend India’s stability and unity in the face of both domestic and international challenges.
In a sharp critique, PM Modi warned that both internal and external forces are seeking to destabilize India by spreading misinformation and fostering division. He said, “Some perverted powers are worried about India’s rise. Within India, and outside it, such people are trying to create instability and anarchy.” He added that these groups aim to disrupt India’s image, divide society along caste lines, and undermine the country’s progress, saying they “want the wrong message to go to global investors” to weaken the country economically and socially.
Without directly naming the opposition, PM Modi addressed the need to resist divisive forces that, in his view, exploit constitutional values for political advantage. He asserted that such groups, which he referred to as “urban Naxals,” aim to hinder India’s development. He called on citizens to “identify this alliance of Urban Naxals and fight against them,” alleging that this group promotes an agenda of a “poor India, weak India” to suit their political strategies.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, acknowledging his role in uniting India post-independence. He credited the BJP government’s approach to governance, which he said has strengthened national unity through policies like “one nation, one tax” and the revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. According to PM Modi, “The discriminatory policies and intent of previous governments weakened national unity.”
Highlighting the BJP’s vision, PM Modi affirmed that the government’s focus on “sabka saath sabka vikas” (together with all, development for all) has worked to eliminate discrimination and foster trust among citizens. He said, “This approach has ended the dissatisfaction among people and enhanced their trust in development schemes,” attributing this model to a decade-long effort aimed at inclusivity and national harmony.
