In a landmark speech to the Guyanese Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored India’s longstanding commitment to non-expansionism and peace. He stated that India has never sought to expand its territories or capture resources, focusing instead on cooperation with the global community.
“We have always stayed away from the idea of resource capturing,” PM Modi remarked, adding that the world must focus on removing the conditions that lead to conflicts. He emphasized that issues like space and the sea should be subjects of universal cooperation rather than conflict.
PM Modi also addressed global challenges, proposing that the world should prioritize ‘democracy first and humanity first.’ He explained that a focus on democracy encourages inclusive development, while humanity first ensures that decisions are made in the best interests of all people.
“Decisions made with humanity first in mind will lead to results that benefit all of humanity,” he affirmed, highlighting the values shared by India and Guyana in strengthening democracy.
During his address, PM Modi reflected on the historical ties between India and Guyana, which have been built over centuries. He recalled the arrival of Indian immigrants to Guyana nearly 180 years ago and the enduring friendship between the two nations through both times of joy and hardship.
“The relation of India and Guyana is very deep, it is the relation of soil, sweat, and diligence,” said PM Modi, adding that both countries had faced similar struggles in the past 200-250 years, which has further strengthened their bond.
This visit to Guyana marks a significant milestone as it is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in over five decades. During his visit, PM Modi joined leaders from Caribbean nations for the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit, highlighting India’s continued commitment to strengthening ties with the Caribbean region.
