Pakistan Urges US For Small Arms And Modern Equipment To Boost Counter-Terrorism Efforts

Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, Masood Khan, has called on Washington to provide small arms and advanced equipment to support Islamabad’s newly launched counter-terrorism initiative, Operation Azm-i-Istehkam.

The decision to launch Operation Azm-i-Istehkam was approved during a recent meeting of Pakistan’s National Action Plan apex committee on June 22. This initiative is part of a broader strategy, approved in 2014, aimed at eradicating militancy from the country.

Ambassador Masood Khan addressed US policymakers, scholars, and corporate leaders at the Wilson Centre in Washington, urging for American support in enhancing Pakistan’s capabilities. “For Operation Azm-i-Istehkam, we need sophisticated small arms and communication equipment,” Khan stated, as reported by Dawn newspaper.

He outlined that Azm-i-Istehkam consists of three components: doctrinal, societal, and operational. Initial phases have already commenced, with the operational phase slated for imminent implementation.

Khan highlighted the urgency of the situation, citing recent threats from Tehreek-i-Taliban militants based in Afghanistan. He emphasized the importance of robust security ties between Pakistan and the US, including intelligence cooperation and the resumption of sales of advanced military platforms.

“Maintaining strong security links and enhancing intelligence cooperation are crucial for regional security, countering terrorism, and safeguarding the interests of both countries and their allies,” Khan asserted.

Addressing bilateral relations, Khan stressed the need for a realistic approach based on ground realities rather than being hindered by isolated issues. He pointed to ongoing high-level defence talks and joint military exercises as examples of the strong defence cooperation between Pakistan and the US.

Furthermore, Khan suggested that the US consider Pakistan as a partner in its diplomatic efforts in Kabul, focusing on counterterrorism and the protection of women’s and girls’ rights in Afghanistan.

“In this era of strategic competition, both nations should build on existing partnerships and explore new avenues to strengthen mutual interests,” Ambassador Khan concluded. “Our engagement should be anchored in practical cooperation, while ensuring security and economic partnerships are reinforced without being derailed by isolated challenges.”
