Pakistan: School principal arrested for rape, blackmailing

According to local media sources, the principal of a private school in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Hadeed was detained on Monday for suspected rape and blackmail. According to Pakistan-based Geo TV, over 45 women have been sexually abused by the principal, Irfan Ghafoor Memon, who utilized CCTV evidence to blackmail them.

In addition, the authorities found approximately 25 short video clips from Irfan’s phone. The authorities confiscated the CCTV cameras’ digital video recorder (DVR) as well as Memon’s cell phone for further investigation.

A video of Memon and a female teacher went viral, exposing the scandal. Soon after, the principal’s office was shut, and he was placed on physical remand for seven days. According to the authorities, Memon alleged that he rented the school for PKR 100,000 per month and that it had roughly 10 female teachers, five male teachers, and 250 students.

Memon has been charged with sexual harassment, threatening, and blackmailing, according to a first information report (FIR).

The investigating officer told Geo TV that Memon would sexually abuse female teachers on the pretext of providing a job. “The accused used to blackmail the women by filming videos,” the IO said.

The Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions Sindh formed a team to probe the situation on the directions of Sindh Education Minister Rana Hussain. Qurban Ali Bhutto, Deputy Director, and assistant directors Javed Akhtar and Mumtaz Hussain Qambrani make up the committee.

The IO further stated that more individuals had been identified who may have DVR and multiple videos of the victims, and that at least two suspects would be apprehended soon.
