Meghan Markle recently shared her personal experience of having a miscarriage nearly five years ago. She spoke about this painful chapter during a conversation on her podcast Confessions of a Female Founder, as reported by People. Her guest for the episode was Reshma Saujani, the founder of Girls Who Code and the CEO of Moms First.
While talking to Saujani, Meghan discussed the emotional difficulty of having to maintain appearances and continue performing, even while privately dealing with the heartbreak of losing a pregnancy.
Meghan brought up the topic by referring to Saujani’s own past experiences. She said, “I’ll bring this up if you’re comfortable talking about it because I know you’ve spoken publicly about as you’re doing Girls Who Code, all the interpersonal things that are happening for you at that time and the miscarriages that you’ve experienced.”
She went on to say that she had also spoken publicly about the miscarriage she had suffered. Meghan explained, “I think in some parallel way, when you have to learn to detach from the thing that you have so much promise and hope for and to be able to be okay at a certain point to let something go, something go that you plan to love for a long time.”
According to People, Meghan and Prince Harry are parents to two children — their son Prince Archie, who is 5 years old, and their daughter Princess Lilibet, who is 3.
Meghan had first revealed her miscarriage in a deeply personal essay published in November 2020. She shared that the incident had happened in July that year. In the piece, which was over 1,000 words long, Meghan described the moment she realized something was wrong. She said she felt a sharp cramp and collapsed to the ground while holding Archie.
She wrote, “I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.” She added, “Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few,” according to People.
