The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the alleged suicide of a 13-year-old girl, a Class VIII student, on the premises of a private school in Guntur district. The tragic incident reportedly took place on October 23, 2024, in the school’s hostel campus at Reddypalem village panchayat.

NHRC Raises Concerns Over Potential Human Rights Violations

In its statement, the NHRC highlighted that, if verified, the incident suggests serious violations of the girl’s human rights. As the incident occurred within the hostel premises, the responsibility of the school authorities—who had lawful custody of the child—is a cause of concern, according to the Commission.

Notice Issued to Andhra Pradesh Authorities

The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Andhra Pradesh, requesting a comprehensive report within four weeks. The report should include details from the police investigation, post-mortem findings with the cause of death, and any other inquiries conducted in connection to the incident.

The NHRC’s directive underscores the importance of accountability and thorough investigation in incidents involving minors in institutional settings.
