Amidst a scorching heatwave that has persisted for more than two weeks, the Meteorological Department of Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, has predicted a much-needed respite. From June 1 to 3, light rain is expected in six districts: Panchkula, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Karnal, and Panipat. This rainfall is anticipated to provide relief to the people who have been suffering due to the intense heat.

Dr. Madan Khichad, Chairman of the Meteorological Department, stated that these districts might experience rain on June 1, with the possibility of additional showers on June 2 and 3.

This comes as a significant relief after 18 consecutive days of severe heatwave conditions, which have not been seen since May 2002. The heatwave has driven temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius since May 13, with many places exceeding 45 degrees. Recently, Sirsa recorded a high of 50.3 degrees, the highest in the country at 49.1 degrees last Thursday, and has remained above 47 degrees for five consecutive days.

The activation of a western disturbance from the night may lead to light rain, offering some respite from the extreme heat.

Heatwave Advisory

In response to the prevailing heatwave, the Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert, advising citizens to take special precautions to ensure their safety. The Health Department’s advisory recommends avoiding strenuous activities during high temperatures and refraining from consuming tea, coffee, and carbonated soft drinks that deplete the body’s water levels. It also advises against high-protein and stale foods.
