Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar departed for Tehran to attend the funeral of President Raisi, Foreign Minister Abdollahian, and other officials. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed Dhankhar’s visit and expressed India’s condolences in an official press release.
Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed their condolences to Iran. Wednesday has been declared a public holiday in Iran, with a funeral expected to take place in Tehran, led by the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah.
Raisi will be laid to rest in his hometown, Mashhad, on Thursday, as announced by Vice-President Mohsen Mansouri. Earlier, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited the Iran embassy in India to express India’s deepest condolences and remember Raisi and Abdollahian as friends of India.
In New Delhi, a condolence book has been opened at Iran’s Embassy for people to pay their respects. India observed a day of national mourning on May 21 to honor the late Iranian leaders.
