Kashmir: Mehbooba Mufti, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the current President of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has launched a scathing critique against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Government of India (GOI). Her comments come in response to a recent order in Uttar Pradesh, which she views as a deliberate attempt by the BJP to erode the constitutional rights guaranteed to all Indian citizens.

Speaking to reporters after the return of a former trade leader to the PDP, Mufti expressed her alarm over what she perceives as the BJP’s agenda to dismantle the constitutional safeguards that ensure individual freedoms. “It’s evident that the BJP seeks to dismantle the constitution, which grants every individual their fundamental rights,” she declared. “They are systematically torturing the very foundation of our democracy.”

Mufti pointed to the BJP’s significant electoral success as a factor that has emboldened their controversial actions. “They won 200 out of 350 seats, yet they refuse to correct their course,” she noted. This, she suggests, is a stark reminder to those who supported the BJP in past elections of the potential consequences of their policies.

She further warned that the BJP’s current policies appear to be targeting Muslims initially, but she fears other minority groups will soon face similar treatment. “They have started with Muslims and will inevitably target other minorities,” Mufti cautioned.

Turning her attention to the issue of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti lambasted the government’s ineffective approach. “Whether it’s our civilians or Indian soldiers, to the GOI they are mere cannon fodder,” she criticized. According to Mufti, the government has failed to fulfill its promises of eradicating militancy, with the situation worsening instead. “Contrary to their claims, militancy is not being wiped out; it is spreading to areas that were previously peaceful.”

Mufti’s remarks come amid growing concerns about the deteriorating security situation
