The mother of the young doctor who was tragically raped and murdered in Kolkata has accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of lying. Banerjee had claimed that the victim’s parents were “never offered money” as compensation. The grieving mother questioned the chief minister’s integrity, saying, “Why would I lie in my daughter’s name?”
“The chief minister is lying. My daughter won’t return. Would I lie in her name? She (the CM) told us that we would receive money and suggested we do something in her memory. I told her that I would collect the money only after justice is served for my daughter,” the mother told ANI.
Victim’s Family Denies CM’s Statement
The victim’s cousin also strongly contradicted Mamata Banerjee’s claim, saying with “full responsibility” that the Trinamool Congress leader herself had made the offer of financial compensation to the family.
Reaction to Banerjee’s Durga Puja Appeal
As Durga Puja approaches, Banerjee urged the public to return to the festive spirit, a plea that the victim’s mother found deeply insensitive.
“Durga Puja was celebrated in my house too; my daughter used to organize everything. But now, it will never be celebrated again in my home. The light in my home is gone. How can I ask people to return to the festival?” she asked. She further challenged Banerjee’s stance by questioning, “If such a tragedy happened in her family, would she say the same thing?”
The Fight for Justice Continues
Despite the pain and grief, the mother is determined to continue her fight for justice. She vowed that the movement for her daughter’s justice would persist “until justice is served.”
The Incident
The incident in question occurred on August 9 when the second-year postgraduate medical student was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata police, is the prime accused in the case.
