Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder: CBI Summons Five Doctors

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Crime Branch in Kolkata has summoned five doctors and hospital staff for questioning in connection with the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case.

The investigation follows the tragic discovery on August 9 of a post-graduate trainee doctor found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim’s family has alleged that she was raped and murdered, igniting nationwide protests from doctors and the medical fraternity.

A CBI official, after visiting the victim’s residence, stated, “The investigation is ongoing. We have recorded the parents’ statements.”

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate earlier criticized the West Bengal government for allegedly attempting to cover up the crime. She condemned the violence that erupted at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital after the incident, questioning the safety of women in the country and expressing dismay over the administration’s response.

“This tragic incident raises critical questions about women’s safety in this country. The local administration’s alleged attempt to cover up the crime and the violence that followed are unacceptable,” Shrinate told ANI.

On Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded that the CBI expedite the investigation and ensure that the guilty are hanged by Sunday, August 18. She also called for the completion of the entire probe by the same date.

The August 9 incident has sparked widespread outrage and led to protests both within and beyond the medical community. On Wednesday night, a mob vandalized the RG Kar Hospital campus, damaging protest sites, vehicles, and public property, prompting security officials to intervene.
