Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that he would resign from his post on September 17, which coincidentally is also the 74th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kejriwal has suggested that Modi might retire when he turns 75, following a rule within the BJP that leaders retire at that age. He also speculated that Modi is preparing to make Union Home Minister Amit Shah his successor. This statement sparked a debate, prompting Amit Shah to clarify that there are no plans to replace Modi, and he will continue as Prime Minister even after turning 75.

Kejriwal’s resignation announcement comes shortly after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in connection with the Delhi Excise policy scam. His decision is seen as a strategic move to galvanize public support for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The timing of his resignation announcement has stirred political speculations, particularly in the context of Modi’s birthday and the potential shift in the political landscape.

The BJP has dismissed Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation announcement as a “PR stunt.” BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari suggested that Kejriwal’s move is an attempt to improve his image, which he believes has shifted from being seen as an honest leader to one associated with corruption. Additionally, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa claimed that Kejriwal’s decision to step down is not a sacrifice but rather a result of the Supreme Court order that prevents him from returning to his office or signing official files.
