Washington, October 23 – Vice President Kamala Harris said on Tuesday that Democrats are ready to challenge any attempt by Donald Trump to prematurely declare victory in the upcoming 2024 election. Speaking just two weeks before Election Day, Harris emphasized that her team is prepared to fight back if necessary, but for now, the focus remains on defeating the Republican nominee.
Harris assured NBC News that the Democratic Party “has the resources and expertise” to counter any move by Trump to subvert the election results. She referenced Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election, stating, “This is a person, Donald Trump, who tried to undo a free and fair election… who incited a violent mob to attack the U.S. Capitol.” Harris highlighted the gravity of the situation, pointing to the injuries and deaths resulting from the January 6 Capitol riots.
Trump, who is facing criminal charges for attempting to overturn the 2020 election results, has refused to acknowledge his loss to President Joe Biden. Harris’s comments come amid growing concerns that Trump might once again contest the results if he loses the 2024 election.
Following his failed legal efforts in 2020, a mob of Trump supporters rioted at the Capitol in an attempt to halt the certification of Biden’s victory. Over 140 law enforcement officers were injured during the violent attack.
At Harris’s campaign rallies, some supporters have been chanting “Lock him up,” referencing Trump’s previous calls to imprison his political opponents. In response, Harris has refrained from echoing the sentiment directly, instead stating, “The courts will take care of that. We’ll take care of November.”
President Joe Biden, during a campaign event on Tuesday, expressed his frustration with Trump’s continued influence over the GOP. “We’ve got to lock him up,” Biden said, but quickly corrected himself, adding, “Lock him out, that’s what I mean.” Biden went on to describe Trump as “a genuine threat to our democracy,” reinforcing the high stakes of the upcoming election.
With the 2024 election approaching, the number of legal disputes surrounding voting rules is expected to increase. Partisan conflicts over election regulations have become a regular feature of presidential campaigns, but litigation has surged in recent years.
