In a detailed address to the Rajya Sabha, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar provided an update on the evolving situation in Bangladesh, highlighting India’s ongoing efforts to safeguard its nationals and monitor the crisis closely.
Dr. Jaishankar informed the House that India is in “close and continuous touch” with its community in Bangladesh through its diplomatic missions. There are approximately 19,000 Indian nationals currently in Bangladesh, including about 9,000 students. The minister noted that the majority of these students had returned to India by July, easing some concerns over their safety.
The External Affairs Minister also emphasized that India is vigilant regarding the status of minorities in Bangladesh amid the ongoing unrest. Reports indicate that various groups and organizations are working to ensure the protection and well-being of minorities. Dr. Jaishankar assured that India will remain “deeply concerned” until law and order are fully restored in the neighboring country.
In light of the complex and volatile situation, India’s border guarding forces have been instructed to maintain heightened alertness. Dr. Jaishankar revealed that in the past 24 hours, there has been constant communication with authorities in Dhaka to stay abreast of developments and coordinate any necessary responses.
Dr. Jaishankar’s remarks underscore India’s commitment to the safety of its citizens abroad and its proactive stance in monitoring and responding to regional crises.
