A massive fire engulfed at least nine residential houses and two cowsheds in the Handwara area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, officials reported. Seven cows also perished in the blaze.

Fire and Emergency Service officials stated that the fire started in the Rajwara area late on the night of July 13 and quickly spread to neighboring houses, causing extensive damage.

The affected structures included two three-storey houses, five double-storey houses, two single-storey houses, and two cowsheds.

Fire tenders from various stations in the Handwara subdistrict were dispatched to the scene to combat the flames. The firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control after a strenuous effort.

A civilian was injured during the incident and was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
