The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has assured that all Indian citizens in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are safe, despite the ongoing conflict in parts of the country.
Speaking at a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the Indian embassy in Kinshasa is closely monitoring the situation and remains in contact with the Indian community.
“There are about 25,000 Indian citizens in the DRC. In Goma, where conflict has been reported, nearly 1,000 Indians were present, and most have left safely. The embassy has issued multiple advisories and helpline numbers for assistance,” Jaiswal said.
The Indian Embassy in Kinshasa, located 2,500 km from Goma, has been actively engaging with Indian nationals to ensure their safety.
Indian Embassy Issues Advisory for Bukavu and South Kivu
On Thursday, the Indian Embassy issued a travel advisory for Indians in Bukavu, South Kivu, and other affected areas.
The advisory stated:
“We have noted reports of M23 rebel movements towards Bukavu, located 200 km from Goma. Given the risk of escalating violence, we strongly advise all Indian nationals in Bukavu to relocate to safer areas while travel routes remain open. We also recommend against any travel to Bukavu at this time.”
Rwanda-Backed Rebels Advance in DRC
The situation in eastern DRC has escalated as M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, have seized control of parts of Goma.
According to Al Jazeera, gunfire has been reported across Goma despite the United Nations Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire. The rebels have now set their sights on Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province, and have vowed to continue their offensive towards the national capital.
The conflict in DRC has intensified over the past week, with heavy fighting between government forces and M23 rebels. The violence has led to mass evacuations and growing international concerns over the humanitarian crisis.
Indian Government Urges Caution
The MEA has urged Indian citizens in DRC to remain vigilant and follow embassy advisories for their safety. The Indian government continues to monitor the evolving situation and is prepared to assist its nationals if necessary.
