IIT-Madras sets up internal committee to look into suicide incidents

After two suicides incident in a month at the Indian Institute of Technology, an inquiry committee has been formed to look into such incidents, the IIT-Madras informed on Wednesday.

The IIT-official said in a statement, “A standing Institute Internal Inquiry Committee, including elected student representatives, which has been recently constituted will look into such incidents.”

The statement of the official further reads that Post-Covid period has been challenging and the institute has been endeavoring to sustain and improve the well-being of the students/scholars, faculty as well as staff on campus while constantly evaluating the various support systems in place.

Notably, a third-year B.Tech student attempting suicide at the IIT-Madras Campus. The deceased was identified as 20-year-old Vaipu Pushpak Sree Sai, a native of Andhra Pradesh.

The press release of the institute reads, “It is with deep anguish that IIT Madras conveys the untimely passing away of a third-year BTech student of the Electrical Engineering department on March 14.” The release further reads that “we request everyone to please respect the privacy of the family at this unfortunate moment.”

“The Institute expresses its sincere condolences and stands united in grief along with the friends and family of the deceased student. May the departed soul rest in peace,” it added.
