Indira Gandhi International Airport of Delhi has become the busiest airport in the world. In fact, in the year 2021, it has become the 13th busiest airport in the world in terms of the number of passengers. IGI has jumped three places this year as compared to last year. In 2020, this international airport was on 16th position.
According to Airports Council International, 3.7 million passengers traveled through IGI airport in 2021. At the same time, 2.8 crore passengers traveled in 2020. Accordingly, 30.3% more passengers traveled to IGI this year than last year.
Meanwhile, in 2021, the busiest airport was Atlanta in the US with 7.6 million passengers, followed by Dallas Fort Worth with 6.2 million passengers and Denver with 5.9 million passengers. At the same time, Guangzhou Airport in China was the busiest airport in the country in terms of passenger numbers in 2020. Last year it dropped to eighth place due to the ban on travel in China.
Moreover, in terms of plane movement in 2021, 3.3 lakh aircraft took off from Delhi airport, while only 2.5 lakh aircraft took off in 2020. The busiest airports in this category are Atlanta with 7.1 million flights, Chicago with 6.8 million, and Dallas Fort Worth Airport which operates 6.5 million flights.
However, ACI is the trade association of the world’s airports with 717 members. It operates 1,950 airports in 185 countries. The new data looks at traffic at more than 2,600 airports in more than 180 countries and territories.
